Information about CAKOVEC Welcome to Cakovec, the city of European spirit and kind people. The city that is also the centre of Medimurje, a Croatian region which offers exceptional scenery and cultural heritage, as well as numerous modern features and facilities.Crakovec is ideally located to provide access to both Slovenia and Hungary, both by road and by rail. It has developed as an important transportation, commercial and economic centre of the Northwest Croatia. There are 17.000 inhabitants.In the thirteenth century, Count Dimitrius Chaky, the Court Magistrate of King Bela IV, had a wooden defence tower built in the central part of Medimurje. This tower found its place in history under the name of Chaktornya (Chak's tower). The town is built around the tower, and its fortress, which was built in the Middle Ages, was named after this tower. There are some other institutions important for the cultural life of the City - the Public Library and the Cultural Centre that hosts motion picture, music and theatre happenings, as well as art exhibitions.In summer, different activities take place in the city squares such as the "Patron Saint's Day" traditionally celebrated on August the 2nd. Late in the winter, attention is drawn to the "Mardi Gras" festival that attracts masked individuals and groups from different parts of Croatia, as well as from the neighbouring countries.Traditionally, Cakovec is a town of gatherings, conferences and presentations. This city offers a great range of cafes, restaurants, pubs and night clubs. The local culinary specialties, high quality wines and entertainment facilities are widely known.There are also numerous sports facilities such as season football, handball training, and other sports teams, as well as for tennis or horse riding. Cakovec is surrounded by beautiful countryside, perfect for hunting and fishing. The water is clean, with abundance of fish.
